Canon EOS 30D Announced
For sure, you have heard of Canon’s replacement for the highly successful EOS 20D dSLR camera. All the buzz over on dpreview.com seems to be about whether or not there are enough enhancements to justify a new model name. That is debatable.
What is clear, however, is that the 1.6x crop factor/8MP dSLR series is not going away in spite of all the full frame hoo-hah. The 1.6x crop factor is actually preferable when using a telephoto lens because it offers a higher pixel density hence higher resolving power of distant subjects (ex. birds). And, 8MP resolution is the “sweet spot” for editorial work, weddings, events, and travel photography. In addition, the 8MB RAW files do not choke ones computer or eat up excessive amounts of hard drive space. It’s just at the sweet spot between resolution and files size!
Will I upgrade to the EOS 30D? The answer is – mostly probably! Unless, there is another new Canon camera positioned in between the EOS 30D and the EOS 5D. As PMA 2006 is over today, it is not likely that there will be any more new camera announcements from Canon until later this year.

The 30D seemed to get a luke-warm reception as it didn’t live up to the specs that many people were predicting. But it certainly has enough over my 300D to make me very interested indeed. Well, ok – I’m going to buy one. I’ll be looking out for the price and availability information here on Robert’s Weblog. Thanks!
