Canon Announces EOS 400D Digital SLR
The photography forums are buzzing with the news that official Canon websites in both Japan and the United Kingdom are showing a 10.1MP successor to the EOS 350D. There has been no official press release yet. Rumors have been circulated around the web for the last few days. Now, it is irrefutable.
What’s new in the EOS 400D? Whadya expect from evolution rather that revolution? Same size (22.2 x 14.8mm) CMOS sensor with more megapixels probably means no noise improvement. Same large LCD that is in the Canon EOS 30D - that’s good! The LCD info display has gone away. Shooting info is now shown on main LCD. What’s cool is that when you put your eye to the viewfinder, the LCD screen automatically goes dark. Continuous shooting at 3fps with up to 27 shots per burst (JPEG large/fine) - that’s too slow for me (forget sports photography). New integrated EOS cleaning system that maintains image integrity by using ultrasonic waves to blast dust off the low pass filter plus a ‘Dust Delete Function’ within the bundled software - that’s very good!
The camera will ship to dealers in mid-September. The price will be US$799.00 body only or US$899.00 with the same EF-S 18-55mm lens that comes with the EOS 350D (Rebel XT). Overall, I say ‘ho hum’. Canon is playing leapfrog with Nikon’s just released D80. The EOS 400D is a superb entry-level dSLR. However if you have the extra money, consider getting an EOS 30D.
Note: The camera will be called the Digital Rebel XTi in North America. Check price and availability on Amazon here.
You can also order the Canon EOS 400D from Amazon.co.uk.

I’m currently living in Cambodia, where a Canon EOS 400D kit costs $1,145. I was wondering how much the same package currenlty costs in Singapore. If it is significantly cheaper, I may just plan a short trip to Singapore to purchase it there. Also, would you happen to know if the prices for Canons are cheaper in Singapore compared to other places in southeast Asia such as Thailand or Malaysia?
