Bought a new camera today – Canon EOS 30D

Canon EOS 30DRobert went down to Alan Photo Trading today and purchased the new Canon EOS 30D. Worth upgrading from the EOS 20D? Hmmm. Well, that’s debatable. I must say, however, that the similarity to the EOS 20D is a big plus for me.

I purchased my first SLR, an Olympus OM4, in 1985 following much deliberation on the Olympus vs. Nikon argument (Canon just wasn’t even in the picture). The Nikon lenses were a lot more expensive than the Olympus versions at the same focal lengths and Olympus had a multi-spot meter! In those days, one kept an SLR for 10 years and bought a new one when the old one wore out. A photographer really got to know a camera well. I can say that’s how I feel about the EOS 20D. Nearly two years and thousands of images latter, I have a good grasp of how to get high-quality images out of the camera. At this point, I want evolution and not revolution… and that is exactly what I get with the EOS 30D.

I started my digital foray in 2001 with a Canon EOS D30. A nice (expensive) camera but just not there. Then, I upgraded to the EOS 10D which provided a breakthough in sensor technology but was too slow for event photography and a bit lacking in resolution. The EOS 20D was the first camera to combine a 8.2 MP CMOS sensor, DIGIC II processor, and real speed (5 fps). The EOS 30D goes further adding a ruggedized shutter, larger LCD, 1/3 stop ISO increments, and yes – a spot meter. Once I have checked out my new 30D, the 20D will go for sale on ClubSnap.

  1. so where’s your OM4 now?

  2. Just a quick comment to say that 2+ years later, my Canon EOS 30D continues to serve me well. It has paid for itself many times over. It is my favourite camera for event photography.

    I still have my OM4.
