Canon’s slimmest cameras ever - Digital IXUS 75 and Digital IXUS 70

Photo of Canon IXUS 75At PMA07 in Las Vegas last month, Canon introduced the PowerShot SD750 and PowerShot SD1000. In Europe and Asia, these cameras are branded as the IXUS 75 and the IXUS 70, respectively.

The main difference between the two cameras is the size of the LCD screen; there is an extra large 3-inch LCD screen on the IXUS 75. The smaller 2.5 inch LCD screen on the IXUS 70 renders the camera slightly slimmer. Both screens are Canon’s new PureColor LCDs that are that are easily visible in brightly lit environments. The larger 3-inch LCD screen on the IXUS 75 has a new multi-level coating that reduces glare, resists scratches, smudges and fingerprints. The IXUS 75 forgoes any viewfinder and relies on the jumbo LCD display. The IXUS 70, however, incorporates a real-image zoom viewfinder. Keep this fact in mind when making your buying decision.

The ‘brains’ of the new IXUS cameras is DIGIC III; the newest iteration of Canon’s ultra-efficient image processor. The new image processor accounts for the camera’s higher performance levels including faster start up, autofocus and shutter response times, improved image quality and more efficient power consumption; resulting in extended battery life under typical shooting conditions.

Both cameras sport the latest Face Detection Technology that recognizes up to nine faces in the frame and adjusts focus, exposure and flash for optimal results. Red-Eye Correction in playback detects and removes red-eye at the touch of a button. With high sensitivity ISO 1600, users can achieve exceptional results in low light - without the use of a flash (expect increased noise).

All Canon IXUS/PowerShot cameras introduced in 2007 are Certified for Windows Vista without any extra downloads or upgrades. Additionally, all current models are fully compatible with other operating systems including Windows XP and Mac OS X (Versions 10.2 - 10.4).

What’s missing? In order to slim down these cameras the zoom lens got chopped from 4x (28-105mm) to 3x (35-105mm). This shortcoming makes both cameras less suitable for travel photography than, for example, the Canon IXUS 850IS.

See the Canon Street Prices page for Singapore pricing.

You can order both the Canon IXUS 75 and Canon IXUS 70 from Amazon.co.uk.

The PowerShot SD750 and the PowerShot SD1000 are available at Amazon.com.
