Canon Europe Announces EOS 1000D Digital SLR
Today, Canon Europe announced the EOS 1000D - the lightest (body 450g) digital EOS camera. The new camera incorporates a range of technologies used in Canon’s professional EOS-1 series cameras, including the DIGIC III image processor, and Live View mode.
The press release states that it will be sold as body-only or in kits with either a Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens or a Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS lens for ’straight-from-the-box shooting’. As with other models in the 300D/400D series, the EOS 1000D is fully compatible with all Canon EF and EF-S lenses.
The EOS 1000D is clearly a replacement for the EOS 400D. It retains the 10MP CMOS sensor and 2.5-inch LCD while using the same body/battery as the 12MP EOS 450D.
So far there is no news on North American availability. In line with previous EOS models, North American branding will be different. Mostly likely the camera will be sold in the USA under the name Rebel XS. To further confuse the issue, in Japan the name is: EOS Kiss F.

A few caveats: The new EOS 1000D uses the newer DIGIC III processing chip. However, 12-bit processing remains from the EOS 400D rather than going to the 14-bit processor used in the EOS 450D. Also, Canon decided to change from the nine-point AF of the 400D to seven-point AF. Will these changes affect the image quality? We will have wait for independent test results.
